With the launch
of the new Staubli JC3/JC4 driver in 2002 most of the problems of
working with Staubli JC3/JC4 loom disks have been addressed.
The root cause
of any problem remains the same. The JC3 and JC4 loom diskettes
use a nonstandard diskette format which means that Windows cannot
read from or write to the diskette in the normal way - low-level
"direct-to-disk" which bypass the normal Windows disk
read/write functions must be used and this can lead to some problems.
There is a known
problem when using the LS-120 "SuperDrive". This
device is a single disk drive that can be used with standard 1.44
Mbyte floppy disks or with special 120 MByte "superdisks".
This introduces and extra layer of complexity when working with
JC3/JC4 disks and read/write operations may sometimes fail with
this drive. Regrettably there is nothing we can do about any problems
with the LS-120 drive and can only recommend fitting a standard
1.44 MByte floppy disk drive as the best way to resolve this.
Any other problems
can usually be resolved either by reformatting the diskette under
Windows (use the full format option and not the "quick"
format option) or by discarding problem diskettes altogether.
The following
tips may help -
The more often
a diskette is written (not read from) the more likely there will
be problems so try not to reuse the same diskette for every loom
file.
If you have
a problem with a diskette then re-format it under Windows. If the
problem persists after formatting then discard the diskette and
use a new one.
Writing to a
diskette using more than one computer can also cause problems due
to slight alignment differences between disk drives. Try to use
the same diskette on the same computer where possible.
