| An
illegal operation is a Windows message which usually occurs
as the result of a bug in a program or a bug within Windows itself.
You will generally see the message
....
has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down ....
What has happened
is that Windows has detected that a program has attempted to do
something that would cause the system to crash
(the "illegal operation) and Windows has stepped in to prevent
this from happening. By acting in this way Windows will have had
to shut the offending program down and the error message is simply
Windows informing the user that this action has been taken.
Additional information
is sometimes offered as part of the error message but this information
is usually of little use in determining the cause of problem.
It will usually
be possible to continue using the computer as normal after an illegal
operation but if Windows does not appear to be operating correctly
you should restart
the computer.
