Disk drive mapping
is a common technique in which a disk drive letter on a network
workstation is mapped (assigned) to a disk drive (or folder) located
on a network server.
1. Go to the
network server where the disk drive is physically located
2. Select
My Computer
3. RIGHT click the disk drive icon that you wish to share
4. Select Sharing from the
menu.
You will need
to give a Share Name for the
disk drive. It is suggested that you use the local drive letter
followed by the word drive (e.g.C-DRIVE or D-DRIVE).
For ScotWeave use you should generally ensure that all users have
Full access to the shared disk
drive - this will enable users to read from and write to the shared
drive.
You can allocate
a password which must be entered each time a computer connects
to the shared drive. This gives a degree of security but it is simpler
if the need for a password can be avoided here. If you are using
Windows® NT4 or 2000 then there are extra security and
user accounts that will have to be setup in order to share a disk
drive. Creating and maintaining Windows® user accounts
is outwith the scope of this article.
1. Go to the
workstation computer that you wish to use the shared drive
2. Select Network Neighborhood
3. Find the computer name of the computer used at step
1 above
5. Double click on the computer name.
6. You will now see a list of available resources at the
selected computer.
7. The disk drive name setup above should appear in this
list
8. RIGHT click on the disk drive name
9. Select Map Network Drive
from the menu
10. Choose
a drive letter that you want to map to the drive
11.Ensure the Reconnect at logon
box is ticked
12.Click on OK to complete
the drive mapping.
You will now
have a new drive letter available when you go to My
Computer. This drive letter will be the disk drive or
folder located at the remote computer.
For example,
if the server computer was called \\SERVER1 and the workstation
called \\CADPC2 and you have mapped drive letter F:
to the D-drive located on the server, then the above process
will create the following mapping
F:
at \\CADPC2 is mapped to \\SERVER1\D-DRIVE
