If you use a
Windows network then you may have encountered the problem of slow
network response when using the recommended Network Neighborhood
or My Network Places shortcuts.
The problem
is that it seems to take forever for all of the machines on your
network to be listed so that you can then connect to one of them.
There are complex technical issues which explain why this happens
but it is frustrating when it happens to you.
If you know
the network name of the computer you wish to connect to then there
is a much faster way to go directly to that computer, without listing
every other computer on the network.
If, for example,
you wish to connect to a computer whose network name is CADLABPC12
then you can use the following procedure -
Select the
Windows Start button
Select Run
from the menu
In the Open
field type \\CADLABPC12
Click on
OK
If the network
name is correct and the computer is online then you should be taken
straight to that machine.
You can use
this procedure for any network machine, simply prefix the machine
name with the double backslash "\\"
This procedure
will work on all Windows versions and can be a great timesaver.
