Restarting Your Computer

If you have to restart the computer for any reason you can do so by using the following methods. These are listed in order of preference - always try them in this order.

1. Use the "Start - Shut Down" sequence
This is the safest way to restart your computer, but may not always work if the system has crashed or hung up.

Move the mouse into the taskbar at the bottom left of the screen
Click the Start menu button
Select the Shut Down menu option
Select the Restart menu option

2. Press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete key combination
If you cannot use the mouse to restart the computer try the following -

Press and hold down the Ctrl key
Press and hold down the Alt key
Press and hold down the Delete key
Release the Delete key

This should restart the computer but you may get a warning when the computer restarts that it was not shut down properly. You may have to do this twice to get the computer to restart.

3. Press the RESET button, if your computer has one
If you cannot shut the system down using either the mouse or keyboard then the next best option to press the RESET button, if your computer is fitted with one. The reset button will usually be located on the computer system box itself (not the keyboard).

A single press of the reset button will usually restart the computer but sometimes it will be necessary to press and hold the reset button for several seconds before the computer will restart. This is a safety mechanism to prevent the computer being restarted by mistake. When the computer restarts you may get a warning that it was not shut down properly.

4. Switch the computer OFF then ON again
This is the last resort, when you cannot use the mouse or keyboard and your computer is not fitted with a reset button, or that does not work either.

Switch the computer OFF by pressing the ON/OFF switch
Wait for approximately 5 seconds or so
Switch the computer ON by pressing the ON/OFF switch

Sometimes it will be necessary to press and hold the ON/OFF switch for several seconds before the computer will restart. When the computer restarts you may get a warning that it was not shut down properly.
